Paper 1–Short Documented essay.
Write a documented essay of 500-600 words in which you analyze Updike’s “A&P”
Besides giving your own analysis of a work of literature, the main purpose of this “practice” paper is to learn how and when to cite information you get from sources other than your own head, and to learn how to construct a Works Cited page. There will be NO research for this paper. The only source is the story you are discussing.
Your topic can be any idea you have about the story, as long as you support that idea with examples from the story. For instance, you could argue that “A&P” is a coming-of-age story, a bildungsroman (remember, I suggested you google that word), by showing that Sammy was immature at the beginning (with examples from the story), but a moment comes when he changes (show it and tell about it), and after that his actions show that he has matured in some way (give examples).
