Write a four-paragraph rhetorical analysis of Antony’s funeral speech. Identify the persuasive devices that Antony uses and evaluate their effectiveness. Think about this as a prompt:
What is Marc Antony trying to persuade the crowd at Julius Caesar’s funeral to do or believe, and how does he achieve this?
Treat this speech like it was really a historical speech that was delivered in ancient Rome; trying to incorporate Shakespeare by name and the play title will only convolute your writing and distract you from focusing on the rhetorical strategy of Antony.
Create a solid thesis statement with attitude (this is what the précis does) and support your thesis with specifics from the speech (in your second and third paragraphs). Some of the persuasive devices Antony uses are: standard rhetorical techniques (pathos, logos, ethos) specific evidence, props, rhetorical questioning, verbal irony, loaded words, repetition, suspense, and appeals to self-interest.
Use the rhetorical précis as your intro paragraph and then follow the speech CHRONOLOGICALLY to write the dense second and third body paragraphs (identifying and supporting one rhetorical device in each body paragraph with at least two text-based examples in each paragraph).
