Write a Letter to Legislator regrading the formula shortage1. Students will write a letter to their member of the State Legislature or a member of Congress, whom they identified in DB#2, regarding a national or state health policy that is currently in Congress. Please use any current National Bill for this assignment. THIS WILL BE EITHER State Representative Pamela A. DeLissio OR Representative Dwight Evans.
2. Students may use a bill they researched for the Policy Presentation assignment or a completely different one to write to a member of Congress. – write the letter based off •Bill Number: H.R. 8038 Formula Shortage Reporting Act of 2022. I did a powerpoint presentation on this bill that I will attach for extra information regarding the topic of the letter. There is also an example letter to the legislator to follow so I will attach that as well.
It is essential to identify the correct member of Congress – Senator/Representative who represents you and can take actions on a bill, depending on where your bill currently is (House/Senate).
The Letter should include the following:
Correct Salutation: You are expected to identify a correct salutation to the member of Congress including the date, correct salutation to the member of Congress, their name, and address. Samples posted on the course are intentionally missing it. Therefore, please include the correct salutation.
Brief introduction: Describe who you are and the purpose of the letter.
Clear actions: Ask your legislator for clear actions regarding a specific bill currently in Congress. Phrase: “to support the bill” is not a clear action. You may ask something like “to cosponsor” your bill if they are not listed as sponsors/cosponsors yet. If they are listed as sponsors/co-sponsors, you may thank them for that and ask them to move your bill to the committee or move it up to a vote in Senate/House floor.
Background: Give a valid argument/background on the healthcare issue/bill to show the importance for a legislator to take an immediate action on a bill. Students may not restate a bill description from the Govtrack/Congress.gov websites, but rather go in depth of the specific healthcare issue and show the significance of the problem they write about.
Legislative Recommendations and Rationales: Provide concise recommendations for action and state why it might be important to the Legislator. A minimum of 2 rationales that directly support the requested action are clear and concise in the body of the letter.
Conclusion: The last paragraph is a very brief summary of your letter.
The letter should be:
Be very convincing and concise in your letter.
One page/single space using a standard letter format and addressed properly to the student’s member of Congress or State Legislator.
The Letter to the Legislator itself does not require any APA format or in-text citations.
The second page is not part of your letter, it is a Reference page where you should list all your sources in APA format. Minimum of 2 references required.
The letter may be in support or in opposition to a current piece of legislation.
The minimum acceptable font for the letter is 11. Do not use any smaller font. Make sure that your letter is readable.
Your name, credentials, and address to prove that you are their constituent must be below your letter separated with the space.
