Write a letter to your local: (a) MP or MPP; (b) School Board; (c) community organization (e.g. religious, community center); or (d) newspaper.
Your letter will be about 800-1000 words.
Your letter will be in the form of a traditional (hamburger style) research paper format. Your letter must contain:
1. INTRODUCTION:
(a) Hook
(b) Thesis statement
(c) Outline of what you will argue
2. BODY:
(a) Second best argument in support of your thesis statement
(b) Third best argument in support of your thesis statement
(c) Best argument in support of your thesis statement
3. CONCLUSION
(a) Rephrase your thesis statement
(b) Briefly outline what you argued and the supporting pieces of evidence
(c) A list of demands that you want the recipient of your letter to commit to, along with an explanation of why it is importnat for the recipient to listen and act on your demands.
4. REFERENCES (APA format) and also in-text citations throughout your paper.

You will write your letter on ONE of these topics:
1. There has been a lot of discussion lately about changing the names of certain streets or institutions because they are named after people who have left racist/colonial legacies. Additionally, there has been a call to rename racist sports mascots. Is there a landmark, street name, or local sports team mascot in your neighbourhood that you would like to see changed? Why?
2. As a result of the Covid Pandemic we have seen a rise in racist and xenophobic instances targeting Asian-Canadians in Canada. Please demonstrate your commitment to diversity, inclusivity, anti-racism, and anti-discrimination by arguing against these attacks.
3. During the past two years we have seen a surge in global protests arising from the senseless death of George Floyd. Police brutality is not a new phenomena. Please demonstrate your commitment to inclusivity, anti-racism, anti-prejudice, and anti-discrimination of Indigenous and Black populations in Canada.

To practice the skills of academic scholarship. This includes doing research, writing a thesis statement (main argument), providing evidence to prove your argument.
