Write a memo to President Johnson stating what you think the U.S. should do in Vietnam in the coming years.

Your memo should therefore explicitly discuss what the “current” situation is (around Dec. ’64), what you believe the U.S.’s political goal should be, and what kind of political and military strategy the U.S. should follow to achieve it. Mention what the U.S. actually did as another option, and explain why you think your idea is better. You should use hindsight about what actually happened, but pretend not to. For example, you should “anticipate” that a large-scale ground intervention in South Vietnam (what the U.S. actually did) might lead to tens of thousands of U.S. war dead (which it did)—then cite the actual number and a source in a footnote.
