John’s main purpose in writing his gospel is to show that Jesus is deity (John 20:31). One unique way he does this is by telling us on several occasions how Jesus uses an expression to describe Himself. This expression is taken from Exodus 3 where God introduces Himself to Moses as the great “I AM”. Jesus clearly wanted all who heard Him to understand that He was in fact God Himself!
