What is an “I-Search”?
The I-Search paper is designed to teach the writer and audience something valuable about a topic and about the nature of research and discovery. Unlike the standard “research paper” with which you usually assume a detached and objective stance, the “I-Search” paper allows you to relate your experience of hunting for facts and information firsthand, and to provide a step-by-step record of the search process. It’s a research paper that is reflective.
Normally, an I-Search paper is about 2,500 words or more. This assignment is about half that. So it is more like an “I-Search Lite” or “mini I-Search Paper.”
Your Topic
The topic for your “search” is any social, cultural, or communication theory that is relevant to what you explored in Project #1 or #2. In fact, you can choose more than one theory, if you want. This topic should be (or will be) discussed in consultation with me.

Your Search
A typical I-Search paper has multiple sections. This one is no different. Here are the sections of your paper and what each section should contain:
I. What I know
This is a brief statement about what you already know (or think you know) about the topic.
II. What I want to know
In this section, discuss what you want to know and why. This provides you direction.
III. My search
Summarize the steps you took to obtain information. How did you determine what was a good source and what wasn’t? Provide examples (200-250 words). Review:

IV. Results
This will come in the form of an annotated bibliography. List the 8 most useful sources, in APA style, and for each source, provide a brief 100-word explanation of how it would apply to your revision (Project #4).. Your list must be alphabetical by source (last name or title). Your list will be made solely of academic sources (articles or books from the Buxton Library). If you want, you can include a video from “Films on demand” or “Academic Video Online (AVON).” Try to avoid tertiary sources, such as encyclopedias. See

V. What I Learned
In this section, write about what you learned through your search, about the topic and about the nature of conducting secondary research. (200-250 words)
Submit your responses as a text entry (see Submitting Assignments Through Canvas). To earn full credit, your must submit the assignment by the due date/time. Late submissions will be accepted up to 24 hours late, receiving no more than 80% credit. After the final deadline, Canvas will assign you peer reviews to complete.
