Write a paper based on pages 113-127 in your textbook, “Miracle at Philadelphia” and the video production “The Constitution: A Dialogue with James Madison and George Mason.” The paper will focus on why the new nation was failing under its first government, the Articles of Confederation. It should then look at some of the major compromises made at the Constitutional Convention over slavery, and the positions of the large population states versus the smaller ones on representation in the new Congress. What were the backgrounds of the men who wrote the Constitution and briefly describe the roles of Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, James Madison, and George Mason? Finally, why was the amendment process so important and vital to the Constitution lasting over 200 years? Does this explain why the Constitution has lasted even though the original document did not include rights for African Americans, women, and the poor?
