Write a paper in which you discuss, in a logical order, the ideas in the topic you have chosen. For example, in my class notes on the economic political and educational institutions I have talked about inequalities. So you might want to organize your paper around that. You might find another way. That’s up to you.
I want to see an introductory paragraph which includes a thesis sentence which summarizes the key elements of the topic you have chosen. And I want to see a concluding paragraph which summarizes your paper.
The paper has page limits. Not less than 3 full pages and not more than five pages double spaced. With a maximum length of five pages you cannot waste words. My three “big words” are CLEAR, CONCISE, and FOCUSED. Each sentence must be clear. It must make sense and it must be grammatically correct. Your paper must be concise (“giving a lot of information clearly and in a few words; brief but comprehensive.”) And it must be focused. On target. You cannot wander off on tangents.
The paper is due by Friday, April 29 before midnight. Papers submitted after that time will not be accepted. No exceptions. If you want me to look over a rough draft get it to me by April 15. Earlier is good. I might be able to suggest something that will help. Papers submitted to me after April 15 will be considered your final draft.
Your paper is worth 100 points. I will grade it based on the following rubric.
Up to 20 points off for grammar and spelling. A few little mistakes, maybe one or two points each. The more mistakes, the more points off.
Up to 40 points off for the clear, concise, and focused dimensions. Sentences that don’t make sense, maybe two or three points each. Drifting off topic five points for each. Extra wordiness, two or three points each.
Up to 40 points off for content. I need to see evidence, examples, and so forth. For example, if your paper is about political inequality then you need to show me the ways in which inequality exists and why.
