Discussion Assignment
Students will post one thread in response to the Discussion prompt provided.
Any sources cited must be formatted in proper current Turabian, but citations are
not required. Be sure to follow the prompts provided in the Discussion text
box.
Often students lack the analytical skills to
think through the necessary details of their research project. The following
questions are designed to take the student through each beginning stage of
their topic, to sift out the good, bad, doable, and unresearchable areas that
they will encounter before they encounter it. It helps the student think
through deeply and not just skim over their topic. This is a major needed step
before a student begins working on their thesis. It is a necessary planning
stage that these questions help to answer.
Using Kuhne’s Seven Questions below, answer
the questions in 1 paragraph each in the discussion thread box (Do Not Attach a
separate document). These questions from Dr. Gary Kuhne’s Action Research will
help you form your problem, purpose, and thesis statements. (Remember the
thesis project topic must align with your chosen cognate.)
1. What is your cognate, and
what is the problem you have decided to address as you now understand it?
2. What do you currently
think is the reason the problem exists?
3. How are you certain that
the problem is both researchable and significant for your own work or ministry?
4. Why is this a problem you
want to spend time on, and will others agree to help you or participate in it?
5. What literature review do
you intend to do regarding this problem?
6. What have others said or
written about on this topic?
7. How do others see or deal
with this problem?
Problem Statement: (1 sentence of
no more than 25 words)
Purpose Statement: (1 sentence of
no more than 25 words)
Thesis Statement: (1 sentence of no more
than 25 words)
After completing Kuhne’s 7 questions, you will
write a single problem statement sentence of no more than 25 words beginning
with, “The problem is …”. You will then write a separate purpose
statement sentence of no more than 25 words beginning with, “The purpose
for this DMIN action research project is…”. Finally, you will write a
single thesis statement sentence of no more than 25 words following the
“If …, then…” format.
Submit your responses to Kuhne’s questions,
along with your three statements here for your classmates to dissect and
comment upon. Your responses to Kuhne’s questions should provide strong
justification for why this problem must be researched. The proposed problem
should apply to your local ministry context, should be very specific and
focused, and should apply to your chosen cognate. Your purpose statement will
identify the way in which you want to address your problem. This answers the
“how?” question. How will you address the problem? Your Thesis
Statement tells the reader what you anticipate the results of your study will
be. Using the If/Then format, it may look like this: “If (purpose is
instituted), then (problem will be addressed).”
Review the Assignment Instructions for reply
requirements. Your final Thread should have a Problem Statement, Purpose
Statement, and Thesis Statement with no more than 25 words each, in addition to
the paragraph-long responses to Kuhne’s questions.
