Assignment 1: choose A or B
A. Ford Pinto: Review and consider the ethics involved in a Corporation balancing the cost of recall compared to the cost of death and injury. See the article Mother Jones 1977 (Links to an external site.)https://www.motherjones.com/politics/1977/09/pinto-madness/. The allegation was that Ford built the Pinto knowing that there was a defect in the gas tank that would cause some significant injuries when the car was rear ended. This is denied by Ford. That Ford balanced the cost of revising the design and recall against the cost of the lawsuits. Do your own research into the facts and prepare a persuasive paper indicating your position on the ethics of how Ford has dealt with this issue.
B. Vioxx: Research the information available on the Internet concerning the drug “Vioxx” and the way Merck dealt with the drug. There is plenty of information available. Evaluate the facts and ethical issues involved in Merck’s decisions concerning Vioxx. Prepare a persuasive paper providing the facts of the case and your arguments as to why or why not the actions of Merck were ethical. Note that Merck has been sued several times and has won most of the cases filed against them concerning Vioxx. If they win, does that establish their actions as ethical?
Assignment: Write a paper of content (not included cover page or footnotes) either defending Ford/Merck or criticizing Ford/Merck concerning their ethical decisions. This is to be a paper that presents the facts and persuasive argument to support your position. Do not assume your reader already knows what the issue is and paper is about.
Format: Maintain the basic rule for writing. There is a…
Beginning (introduction), This first paragraph should identify to the reader what your thesis is and what you expect to accomplish by the conclusion of the paper.
Middle (content and argument) several paragraphs, and
End (summary or conclusion).
Your first paragraph should introduce what the topic is and present the thesis of your paper. The following paragraphs should break down the points you are making in a sequential order. Make a separate paragraph for each subject or point that you are making. The final paragraph should summarize the main thesis of the paper. I understand this format with headings is different than most other papers that you may have written. Do not have run on paragraphs that put several points or topics together. The following link provides an example of a student paper subject to the same format conditions. Unit 1 example.docx Your paper will be shorter. There is a three page minimum for content.
You must have a cover sheet that has your name, the name of the assignment and an outline of the paper.
Note: Each paragraph of the paper is to have its own heading. This may not be a style you are used to but it makes it much easier for me to read and understand your paper.
The cover page outline may be an outline based on the headings you have included for each paragraph of your paper. I like clear organization. I want to be able to look at your headings and understand what the issue is and the points you make to support your conclusion. If that is not clear from your outline you will need more detail or better expressed headings. Do not have headings of “Introduction, Middle, Conclusion”.
References: The assignment will be in ACS (Links to an external site. https://libguides.williams.edu/citing/acs) format. Click on this link if you wish a complete description of the ACS (Links to an external site.) format. I expect you to footnote all quotes and material taken from other sources. You will also need a bibliography at the end that include all resources used. Please refer to the link for further guidances on how to format your references.
Your paper should contain at least 3 sources (one may be your textbook), and at least three pages of content. References should be footnoted and included in a bibliography at the end. The essay should be in 12pt Arial font, with 1” margins with line spacing of 1 1/2.
General Rules: First- Consider who your audience is and write at their level and directed to have the greatest impact on them. For this paper your audience is to be senior level college students in Business. A good rule in writing successful essays is outline, write, reconsider, rewrite, AND proof read. Check for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and coherence. It is a good technique to write your essay, ‘let it lay’ overnight and then re-read it. Your first ‘draft’ should NOT be your final ‘essay.’
Turnitin: Your submission will be evaluated through “Turnitin” to verify it is your work and not copied. If your submission is shown to be copied it will receive a zero grade and the issue will be brought to the University for discipline consideration.
