SUMMARY: Write a paper offering a summative report of insights gained and conclusions reached from this course. This is designed as a reflective and consolidating exercise. The paper should address all four of the key components of Christian ethical reflection, as discussed in class. In other words, it should clearly consider the situational, (The situational assessment piece of our model for doing ethics is the place to start. This is the first of four logically sequential steps in our ethical decision-making process. It involves, obviously, a clear-eyed evaluation of the factual realities before us. But it also necessarily includes an assessment of why people react the way they do to the evidence and moral options before them. ) the normative, (And by normative, of course, we mean the moral ideals we ought to be pursuing, and the standards to which we are seeking to align ourselves and our behaviors) the communal, (The Communal: Listening to Other Wise Voices) and the so-called “existential” ( Dependence on the Holy Spirit for personal guidance) aspects of this important moral issue. The paper should reflect engagement with the course lecture content and reading assignments. In addition, it should reflect broader reading in other relevant literature and related digital resources. Students are encouraged to engage in such broader reading throughout the course, and not leave such reading to the very end. The papers are to be properly formatted research papers. Pages should be numbered. Generally speaking, a paper should reference, in addition to select course lectures and assigned readings, at least five (5) other substantive sources. Special consideration should be given to sources listed in the course bibliography. Each paper should include a cover page and sub-headings within the text of the paper. A table of contents is not required. When citing Scripture, do so in parentheses, using the abbreviations for biblical books listed in the Bethel Guide to Writing. In accordance with published Bethel policy, use gender accurate language. Properly formatted citations and a properly formatted reference list (or bibliography) are also essential. Any recognized citation format is acceptable, but the simplified Turabian (University of Chicago) format illustrated in the Bethel Guide to Writing (see Moodle) is recommended. Alternatively, students may follow traditional Turabian or APA format. In any event, papers must be submitted as Word documents (not PDFs)
