The Senior Research and Oral Defense Paper is a culminating activity for every Richard Wright Public Charter School for Journalism and Media Arts graduate. The purpose of requiring research is to ensure students can judge the validity of a source as well as to know how to gather relevant information to answer questions or inform on a topic. In addition writing a research paper is an integral part of academic success in college and post secondary work. The Richard Wright graduate is expected to be independent and creative 21st century thinkers and problem solvers, the Senior Research and Oral Defense Paper process allows students to achieve these goals.

Overview of Student’s Research Paper and Oral Defense Project:
As a culminating activity, every senior of RWANDAS is required to research, write and defend their findings of a selected topic. The research paper involves long term in depth research, in which you must immerse yourself into the topic you selected. The research paper prepares you for the academic and professional world, by introducing you to research, the writing process and oral defense of your selected topic.
This writing process commences with selection of your topic in September and an oral defense of your finding before a selected panel in May.

The Senior Research and Oral Defense Paper consist of the following components:
Title Page/Cover Page
Four Chapters
Chapter 1: Introduction: Includes Hypothesis/Thesis statement
Chapter 2: Literature Review
Chapter 3: Research Findings : Body of the paper it includes details that support the hypothesis/thesis statement
Chapter 4: Conclusions and Recommendations

Reference Page: includes bibliography with a minimum of 25 citations/30 maximum citations.
Length of Paper: 26 pages, 12 font and double-spaced.
The paper must be in narrative form.
