Write a paper on the he sport in Indigenous peoples, colonialism, gender, race, ethnicity, social class and the business, and global issues.
• Reflect back on the key themes of the course so as to demonstrate your understanding of
the importance of the social history of sport.
• Your answer here should not be reduced to a list of course topics. Rather, it should offer a
clear and detailed discussion of selected concepts that you deem to be the most significant
and should cite specific examples from class.
• To guide your thinking, consider the following questions (you are not required to answer
each or any of these questions, they are merely intended to guide your thinking):
o What are the defining characteristics of sports history and why is it an important
field of study?
o What were the most important concepts covered in the course and why are they
important?
o How do these concepts relate to the broader objectives of the course?
2. Connections: Explain the connections between topics discussed in the course.
• Having identified key themes in the course, this component should explain the
relationships between course concepts to reveal how power dynamics operate on multiple
levels with respect to things like race, class, gender etc.
• Your answer does not need to cover every topic discussed in class. Rather, you may
choose two or three concepts and explain how they relate to one another, for example.
• To guide your thinking, consider the following questions:
o What is the relationship between such things as race, gender, class,
commercialism, colonialism, development, and so on?
o How did sport maintain or challenge social hierarchies related to more than one
theme of the course?
o How has your understanding of an issue covered in one of the early modules
changed when viewed in light of your analysis of a later module?
3. Extensions: Discuss how the class has changed your understanding of social issues
related to sport and physical activity in both historical and contemporary contexts.
• Your task here is to apply what you have learned in class to broader issues of social
equality and inequality in both historical and contemporary contexts.
• Think back to our discussions about the general concerns of sport historians and how they
understand the connections between sport, history and social power dynamics.
• To guide your thinking, consider the following questions:
o How has your thinking changed from the first day of class to today?
o How is the history of sport and social struggle still relevant today with respect to
larger/systemic social issues?
o How have the topics we have discussed impacted your own experience with, and
understanding of, sport, physical activity and/or society more broadly?
Your exam should be formatted as follows:
• 12-point font, Times New Roman, double spaced, Word document.
• 1,200 – 1,500 word-limit (not including references).
