Write a paper using
two of the six moral theories (Virtue Ethics, Natural Law, Utilitarianism,
Ethical Egoism, Deontological Ethics, and Contractarianism) to discuss the
moral issue of Animal Rights and Environmental Duty found in the text-book.
The main thing is to
pick two explicit theories and stick to them. Please cite a philosopher for
each theory and ground the discussion on a recognized philosopher—for example,
Virtue Ethics – Porphyry and Utilitarianism – Bentham or Mill. Dig into one or
the other and describe how it would address the issue of Animal rights and
Environmental Duty. Stay away from legal issues.
If you choose Virtue
Ethics, explain what virtue is. Animals have virtues, too, but focus on what
human virtues are at issue. What are they? Kindness? Loyalty to one’s pets?
etc., and if you choose Utilitarianism will need to explain how and why we can
apply utility to non-human animals. How exactly would that work? Quote and
write a page or two on recognized philosophers and analyze their arguments.
Then you can go beyond generalizations. That Do you think they are good
arguments or bad arguments? Why? Please make sure you quote him and cite him.
If you do use an
article, make sure you do not rely solely on one article for each theory and do
not only summarize those arguments. Your own analysis should be more in the
paper. Also, if you use any article, do not forget to cite it.
