A personal reflection (Option 1). Choose either topic to write 500-1000 words on. Since we are living through the era of COVID-19, a time period marked by tragedy, crisis, and upheaval much like the Trojan War, this course provides an opportunity to apply insights from Greek and Roman literature very directly to current events. At a time like this, a personal reflection may feel more relevant than yet another “paper assignment” and I want to give you the opportunity, if you desire, to undertake such a reflection.
Option 1:
Write a personal reflection on taking HUMN 115 and reading the assigned works in this particular year. Here are some questions to get your thinking started. You do not need to answer all of these questions–just read them and see where they take your thinking. Can the works we have read in HUMN 115 help people living through the chaos of COVID-19? Are there ideas in these pieces of literature that remain relevant in a society facing a novel virus and the societal disruptions that come with such a disease? (For an example of Greek literature informing the response to another issue, see the video in Unit 1A.) Have any of the texts we read this semester had an impact on you personally? If so, how? Does literature have a role to play in times of crisis? Can an understanding of literature help us respond to crises? You may want to think about the word “respond” both in a practical (i.e. actions we take to address a crisis) and in an emotional sense (i.e. how we understand the feelings that a crisis may evoke). Or if there’s something else about the course and current events you’d rather reflect on–write about that!
