Write a précis for one of the essays found in Hoffman’s Monsters Chapter 1: “Why Do We Create Monsters?”
Step-by-Step Approach
First, choose one of the approved chapter essays to write about.
Second, study the essay several times carefully, taking copious notes. Come to a deep understanding of the ideas.
Third, identify each of the required précis elements, and write them down for yourself.
Fourth, write your précis, using the instructions and models in the Rhetorical Précis Lesson.
Fifth, review your instructor’s MLA Formatting Help videos and resources, and make absolutely certain that you have formatted your essay to exact specifications.Since you are discussing a source, your precis must also include a Works Cited page. It must also include parenthetical citations for any item you specifically quote. Refer to your handbook’s MLA section and your professor’s lesson on creating Works Cited pages.
Sixth, edit, edit, edit, revise, revise, revise, and then edit again to perfection. Make content, formatting, and source usage impeccable. Are you marking all source titles correctly? Short works like essays and chapters from books should have quotation marks around their titles, like this: “You Are Not Your Mind.” Titles of long works should be in italics, even on the Works Cited page, like this: The Power of Now.
More on the Works Cited Page
A Works Cited page is required. For your listing, follow my MLA lessons carefully to create a proper Works Cited page and listing with hanging indents. Also follow the MLA listing standards described below. Don’t forget that the author of the article rather than the general editor of the book gets first listing. (The editor gets credit later within the listing):
