Write a research paper proposal is the succinct presentation of a focused argumentative topic you plan to investigate and write about for the final weeks of the term. The proposal is also the first step toward receiving topic approval for your final 10 to 12 pages typed, double-spaced research paper which is due at the end of the semester. A good proposal reflects that you have thought about your project in its entirety, you have identified a narrowed, arguable focus that does not merely repeat the thoughts and ideas of others, and that you can find a variety of sources to support your claim. The proposal also requires that you state analytical questions you can investigate and answer in the final paper.
For example, what does “analytical” mean? An analytical question can take different forms and one form is not necessarily better than others. But an analytical question moves beyond the “what” and explores the “how” and the “why.” For instance, an analytical paper would examine the causes and/or effects of poverty within a specific geographical area or for a group of individuals.
As such, a good research paper proposal must contain the following elements:
1) A clearly stated and focused argumentative issue.
2) A statement of the research questions (three minimum) the paper will address and attempt to answer. Your goal is to explain or prove a point, not just restate the facts.
3) A brief overview of the major issues related to the general topic. In other words, what is the controversy? How does your proposed argument fit within the context of the controversy? What new insights will your argument provide to the overall issue? It is strongly recommended time is spent exploring the varied perspectives on the topic in order to formulate a position.
4) The inclusion of three or more sources that relate to the argument. You must identify the source by author and title and briefly explain the source’s connection to your focused topic. The inclusion of these sources will help illustrate you have done some preliminary research.
5) In general, the proposal must answer the “so what?” question. In other words, why is the stated argument significant and relevant?
The proposal itself must be 2 to 3 typed, double-spaced pages only. It must be written and typed in standard, edited American English in concise, clear language. Proposals that are poorly worded, contain vague language, reflect a broad, unfocused scope or illustrate significant errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, or organization will not be accepted. The clarity of ideas and a narrowed, specific focus are essential for a proposal’s approval. Proposals that do not meet these criteria must be revised in order to receive a grade.
