The purpose of this assignment is to enhance media consumers’ skills in critical analysis of mass media messages. Specifically, media consumers are encouraged to assess how news media portray women, the elderly and members of ethnic groups. To begin, download the Media Monitor Form. The form will help you to answer some basic questions regarding the images and issues prevalent in news media content. In the case of news items, you should determine which journalists report the stories and what sources they select to tell such stories. You will also need to observe and describe the images portrayed in the items, and indicate whether some level of bias (either negative or positive) appears in the portrayals. Remember that portrayals are prevalent in pictures, language and text. Ultimately, analysis and assessment of the media item should generate suggestions for changes in media coverage of members of specific populations.
