kindly read the instructions carefully.What you choose to include in your Journal is largely up to you but it is well to remember that it is a primary assessment tool in the class and satisfactory achievement will undoubtedly prepare you for the
comprehensive, subjective take-home final exam. For each section you examine you should consider the key concepts addressed including any extra reflective questions that might be given by the instructor. A successful journal entry will not summarize or even paraphrase lecture material but will demonstrate understanding by explaining, linking, and/or applying concepts covered in lecture and readings.
Other things you may consider including (but not all are mandatory) are:
– “Explaining things back” – remember that these journals replace traditional examination-type assessment and should clearly demonstrate your complete grasp of the material. Try to forget that the instructor knows this material (hopefully!) and explain it as if to someone who knows nothing (easier to believe! )
– Maps, diagrams, schematics, tables, or images that have aided your comprehension or have helped discern the concepts
– How has supplementary reading, research, or lecture helped you understand the ideas and theories?
– What benefit do you personally see in having gained this understanding?
– What things have you learned beyond the basics and what more would you like to know?
– Successes – with consideration of what you feel this has contributed to your understanding
– Challenges encountered and solutions attempted (whether successful or not)
– And others???
Your Journal must be completed on UR Courses in the area designated and be completed by each submission deadline as announced (you will have one week from the announcement in class and online to complete your journal. There will be a total of three (3) entries required during the term.
Your journal MUST contain a minimum 550-650 original word entry for each section covered (exclusive of diagrams). They should be demonstrative of your grasp of key concepts and be graded on your ability to explain, link, and apply them. Any reference to or use of outside sources (beyond class material) must be cited for source. Your grade will also depend on the effectiveness of your presentation.
