Write a short essay on whether three U.S. pharmaceutical companies–Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson and Johnson–should be required to share their COVID-19 vaccine “recipes” and technology with other countries, particularly with developing countries that are currently struggling to contain the pandemic.

For the next two weeks, instead of posting your thoughts on the discussion board, I would like you to research and write a short essay on whether three U.S. pharmaceutical companies–Pfizer, Moderna, Johnson and Johnson–should be required to share their COVID-19 vaccine “recipes” and technology with other countries, particularly with developing countries that are currently struggling to contain the pandemic. (See attachment, “Grows on U.S. Companies…” This reading is also located in the “Reading Corner.”)
Your essay should include the following parts:
A brief background on how COVID-19 has spread globally and the current data on number of infections and deaths as well as how successful vaccination programs have been in different parts of the world to slow transmission of the virus. Note: Here it is important to breakdown this data by developed world vs. developing world countries.
The arguments for and against a requirement that would oblige pharmaceutical companies to share their COVID-19 research with developing countries and assist them in the production of the vaccine.
Your opinion on whether you think Pres. Biden should use the Defense Production Act to require pharmaceutical companies to share this information and help set up factories in developing countries to produce their vaccines.
NOTE-1: Your essay should be based on the assumption that if the War Powers act were to be enacted, the three pharmaceutical companies would receive some type of monetary compensation for their efforts.
This essay should be written as a Word document and be between 600-800 words. Your essay can use the New York Times article (“Pressure Grows on U.S. Companies to Share Covid Vaccine Technology”) as a source, but you also must cite at least two other reputable sources in your essay. The in-text citations need to follow MLA formatting and there must be a Works Cited page at the end of the essay.
