What is a summary?
A summary gives an overview of the main points of a text from beginning to end and be written in such a way that a person who has not read the text will be able to understand what it is about. Please note that a summary is not a review. What you think of the text–whether you like it or don’t like it–is irrelevant. Your personal experience and opinion of the text should not be included in your summary.
Passing Grade:
For a passing grade your paper needs to be written by you in your own words; it needs to focus on the Mediterranean as a system; it needs to contain accurately included quotes that are immediately followed by accurately formatted footnotes; it needs to contain an accurately formatted bibliography. The paper should be no more than 1,000 words excluding the bibliography (990–1010 words is acceptable).
Citations:
When we write texts in history, we cite our sources using the Chicago Manual of Style: Notes and Bibliography. This means that you will write your citations in the form of footnotes at the bottom of the page, not as in-text parentheses.
