Write a thesis-driven essay that contributes to our class discussion of identity and/or the self. Use at least 1 source from class and 4 outside sources that are reliable and diverse to help create and support your claims. Remember: the fundamental structure of academic writing can be summed up in the phrase “they say/I say.” Your argument will be a response to the ideas we have developed in class and those that you encountered in your research. This means that you will summarize those existing ideas briefly before adding something significant to the conversation. Do not merely repeat the ideas of others.
Specific prompts: select one of the following to use as a guide for composing your essay. You need not answer each individual question; they are merely suggestions to spark your interest. If you would like to write on a totally different topic related to the self or identity, just let me know.
1. Artificial Selves: To what extent or in what contexts should we consider artificially intelligent entities to have a self? If such AI does not yet exist, what characteristics would allow us to conclude that they did have selfhood? What are the implications of considering them selves, or non-selves? Should we be seeking to create AI with selves? What implications do AI selves have for human selves?
