Choose a news item that involves a regional organization, regional trade agreement or sub-
region that is covered in this course. Write a case study or policy brief on this issue. Your
discussion must include the following:
• Regional and historical context of the issue
• An evaluation of the case in relation to the main theories, phases and types of
regionalism where relevant.
• A critical discussion pertaining to issues of identity: regional or multiple, shifting
identities or lack thereof and how geopolitics factors in the dynamics of the case.
• Be sure to integrate pertinent discussions on trade, political economy, governance,
climate change, human rights, security and democracy.
• Please include a copy of the news item or original article as an appendix. (Issues may
include, but are not limited to: CARICOM, AUKUS, OAS and Venezuela, Haitian
Refugees, Quad Agreement, COVID-19 Pandemic, Climate Change, TPP or any other)
Students are required to submit an individual seminar paper for this course. Your paper
should be between 10 and 12 pages in length (3500), typewritten, double-spaced pages
including the bibliography. It should have a coherent structure with an introduction that
clearly states your research questions or main arguments and sets out how you intend to
address these in the rest of the paper. The main body of the paper should have proper
headings and sub-divisions and a conclusion that summarizes and synthesizes the principal
arguments and findings. Papers for a course of this type are usually enhanced by maps,
statistical tables etc. All such additions must be properly referenced.
Your paper MUST be well referenced according to the standard guidelines for academic
referencing in the Social Sciences (Chicago)and it must have an adequate, correctly laid out
bibliography at the end, even if you have used textnotes and/or footnotes. Failure to do this will
incur a considerable loss of marks. All in text quotations must have a page number. Use Turnitin
to check the comprehensiveness of your referencing. Likewise, you are expected to proofread and
edit your work carefully so as to present the best possible expression in English of your thoughts.
