The purpose of this assignment is to discuss and reflect on the role race and gender played in shaping the structures of domination and the everyday lives and livelihoods of non-white South Africans during the apartheid era by focusing on one character, an event, or selected chapter(s) from Born a Crime. Use your selection to analytically reflect on various themes and issues in the book, such as mobility, agency, power, geography, kinship, religion, violence, language,

Your essay should include:

ways in which race and gender enables domination through the production of difference
• A clearly articulated argument in the opening paragraph
• Relevant evidence to support your argument
• A concluding paragraph that goes beyond summarizing your main argument to make a
case for why paying attention to gender and race is important
• references for direct quotes (any format is fine as long as there is consistency)
• references for sources other than Born a Crime
• 1000 words (or 4 pages double-spaced, one-inch margins all over, 12 point font size).
