-Scan Over: professional Sample Beginnings from various Best American Essays (notice what moves/ approaches might work for you) -AND/OR- a few student beginnings from this year’s Mercer Street.
Also: consider beginnings from across genres (film, tv, plays, books, games, dance, stories etc.) that you know and love.

Post: your full draft (6 pages + Works Cited page; at least 3 ancillary sources plus your core text) to the Brightspace Assignment and have an “edit” access shareable google doc ready to work with in class on Monday 11/8

1) Refine/ Sharpen Connections (see resource on uses of ancillary texts; feedback on connections and examples in Mercer Street essays)
2) Reflection: integrate your own reflective work throughout – as the thread that shows how your ideas are developing in relation to the connections (synthesis) you are making between your sources and pieces of evidence (see sentences from ON FIRE and ending paras from Makris essay)
3) Coherence & Structure: think on all levels from within sentences, sentence to sentence, and between paragraphs.
4) Devise an ending and a beginning; give your work a thoughtful and specific title

6 full pages minimum (up to 7 total)
3 Ancillary Sources (at least one must be a substantive essay/ article, one must be an artwork)
MLA in-text citations and a Works Cited, properly formatted
