Background: So far we have learned about the characteristics of language. We have also briefly spent time talking about dead languages such as Latin or Kiowa or nearly extinct languages such as Nuahtl. We have also talked about how a native language is bound to culture and cultural identity for a people. We examined how in an effort to secure unification between Scotland, Ireland, and Wales, the British government enacted laws to suppress and ultimately eliminate the historical languages of those countries to the effect that there are only few thousand speakers of those languages, most of them elderly and rural.
Objective: Research, compose, and document information on the Indian boarding schools and the code talkers of WWI and WWII. Argue for why or why not diversity is advantageous to a society.
Strategy: Write an essay about the Indian Boarding Schools and the Code Talkers. Explain how these two institutions were incompatible with each other. Based upon what you have learned about the Code Talkers, explain whether or not a multiethnic society rather than being a weakness is advantageous to the culture at large. You must use at least four valid sources for this assignment. I would suggest going to university anthropology or history website, government/military websites, or official tribal websites for this assignment. Do not use Wikipedia, Britannica, or other encyclopedia sources. Be sure to include a graphic, both cited and entered.
