Write an essay arguing that the course was effective for you, personally. Some form of that is the thesis of this essay. Try to select one reading from each of the main sections of the course, and explain how the reading positively impacted, or deepened your understanding of, or appreciation for each of the four questions of ALAS (4BQs), and how the assignments improved your competency or improved your mastery in each of the core competencies (Communication, Critical Thinking, Social and Personal Responsibility, and Information Literacy).
The reflective essay must be in APA format. It must be a at least four (4) pages of content (but it can be longer, if you want)
Instructions:
You do not need to upload each assignment you choose into the portfolio document. You can assume the reader has access to them. This means that the only thing you are technically turning in is the reflective essay.
The reflective essay should do all of the following:
Begin with an introduction that tells the reader what you plan to do in the portfolio, what the goal of the reflective paper is, and how you will achieve that goal. Be specific. The introduction should mirror the structure of the reflective paper itself. You might consider writing it last. (about 1/2 page, one or two paragraphs)
Next, you need to explain the concept of the ALAS program and give your reader an idea of this course itself. You do not need to talk about every text, but should give the reader an idea of the kinds of things we read, and what the point of the course was. This may be more than one paragraph. In this portion of the reflective essay you must use the introduction to ALAS written by Dr. Crocker (our provost) and quote that document at least once (briefly) in your explanation. The reader should understand what ALAS is about in general, and what our course is about in particular. (about 2/3 to 1 page)
You should then briefly talk about each of the four questions of ALAS, and try to be specific about which reading had the most impact on the way you think about, understand or relate to the question. I suggest simply taking this one Big Question at a time, and pairing each question with one of the readings that you found most relevant to the question. So, one paragraph per question is probably sufficient, if you briefly explain how one of the readings had an impact on how you understand the question. Use different readings for each question, and try to use readings from different sections of the course. (1-3 pages)
You should then proceed to explain how various assignments (which you select) have positively impacted your growth towards proficiency in the different core competencies. You can organize this however you like, but the best approach is probably to organize it around the core competencies themselves. Begin with a brief explanation of the competency itself (what does it mean, and how would you know if someone was good at it, why it is important, or whatever), and then talk about how a particular assignments helped you improve your competency. Remember to explain the assignment to the reader. Feel free to rely on what you wrote for the assignments regarding about the core competencies–you have already done some of the work here. You will have to adapt it a bit. (About 1-2 paragraphs per competency is probably sufficient, about 1-3 pages total)
Finally, end with a brief general reflection by way of conclusion. Here you can make general claims about the course, the competencies, the readings, etc., and wind it up for the reader. (probably less than a page).
It should be in APA style (12 pt. font, 1-inch margins all around, number pages, etc.). Do as well as you can with this.
It should not address me, but an imaginary reader who does not know the content of the course, or the assignment requirements. This means that when you talk about the course, or assignments you will need to explain them a bit. Take your time, and write this to someone who does not know about the course, the readings, or assignments, or what the core competencies are, what they mean, etc. You should feel like you have a lot of explaining to do.
It must refer to at least one assignment from each Section, and at least three different texts.
The texts to chooose from are Gilgamesh, Antigone, Platos Cave, The Tempest, Dante’s Inferno, Kants “What is enlightment”, Frankeinstein, and the book 1984
