Imagine Frederick Douglass hearing the stories “How Mr. Rabbit Was Too Sharp for Mr. Fox” and “The Awful Fate of Mr. Wolf.” Write an essay based on the experiences he describes in his Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, how do you think he would react to these tales? Would he be offended? Amused? Sympathetic? Relate your interpretation to actual events in Douglass’ Narrative.
The essay must include supporting evidence drawn from at least two secondary sources. By secondary sources, I mean books, articles, or websites that provide biographical, historical, literary-critical, or other useful perspectives on the literary texts you are analyzing.
Your essay would probably require research into how and why Douglass developed the elevated form of discourse that he employed in his Narrative and all his other writings and speeches. You might ponder and develop an interesting claim (thesis) about how this self-educated and extraordinarily eloquent ex-slave might have viewed folktales that were the product of his illiterate kinsmen and expressed in a spoken dialect so obviously different from standard English expression.
