The essay consists of a critical comparison of the de la Cadena and Wolf books. It is, in essence, a larger scale version of the position papers you will make throughout the course. It should include, but is not limited to, a consideration of the following questions: a) whose theoretical approach do you feel is more Page 4 of 9 insightful for addressing issues of social importance, and why?; b) How does each author think about patterns of social organization? Which author’s conceptualization do you prefer, and why?; and, c) How does each author see the past and future of anthropology/social justice? In other words what are their respective political, moral, and ethical positions toward the role of anthropology as a discipline? Whose position do you prefer and why? Each question should provide 1 or 2 detailed examples from each book to support your arguments. Also taken into consideration for the grade is: 1) the incorporation of chapters not covered in class lectures; 2) logical consistency; 3) clarity of argumentation; 4) the ability to incorporate pertinent material from the course readings; and, 5) the ability to make the 3 questions cohere and inform each other. It is to be 12- 15 pages long, typed, double-spaced, 2.5 cm/1″ margins, using a Times New Roman (or comparable) font in an 11 or 12 pt. size. The essay style is expected to conform to the standards of the American Anthropological Association (look at any issue of American Anthropologist or American Ethnologist to see how sources are referenced, notes are included, and bibliographies constructed)
