The Crucible Essay Assignment
Choose one of the topics below and write a five-paragraph essay. This is a literary analysis, which means that all claims made in the essay must be supported by quotes from the play.
This essay should have an introduction with a thesis statement, three body paragraphs each containing at least two direct quotes from the book supporting your idea, and a conclusion restating your thesis. This means your essay should have at least six quotes.
The essay should be typed, double-spaced, 12 point font, Times
New Roman font, one-inch margins, in MLA format.
Together with this structure, you need to make sure that you have
grammatically correct and complete sentences.
Choose one of the following prompts to write your essay on:
As a minister, Reverend Parris is supposed to devote himself to the spiritual welfare of the inhabitants of Salem. Write an essay discussing Parris’s concerns and motivations. Is he an effective minister?
Compare and contrast Elizabeth Proctor and Abigail Williams. What are their individual positive and negative character traits?
Write a character analysis of John Proctor or Deputy Governor Danforth. What are their character traits and their motivations?
Abigail’s faults are quite obvious, but does she deserve the blame for the outcome of the play? Why or why not? Support your argument with specific evidence from the play.
