Write an essay in which you analyze and interpret some connections between two works from the class.
This is a relatively “open” assignment, a chance for you to explore the literature and make connections. Some interesting pairings may include the following:
Comparison and contrast of the political visions of two of the political reflections: The Communist Manifesto, The Prince, Plato: Five Dialogues
Spiritual reflections involved in the Christian Mysticism writings as compared with spiritual/religious views found in Father Sergius, Candide, Antigone, Plato: Five Dialogues, others…
The way in which political ideas found in one of the nonfiction texts compare/contrast with the ideas employed in one of the fictional texts in which politics figures in a major way (In the Pond, Candide, The Stranger, others…)
The way “magic” (for lack of a better term) informs some of these texts (The Maginogion, The Palm-Wine Drinkard, perhaps even Candide)
Examination of cultural repression (inequality, political subjectivity, etc.) and responses to it (consider, perhaps, A Doll’s House, The Stranger, In the Pond, Plato: Five Dialogues, others…)
That should be enough to give you some sense of what I’m thinking of. You are, by no means, limited to these options; these are just some quickly thought-out ideas that would seem to work for the assignment.
Requirements: 1200 words; 2 scholarly research sources; MLA, APA, or Chicago/Turabian style; due Day 7 of Week 6 (This essay may be submitted any time before the end of the class; students are encouraged to turn it in early).
