Because some of you may not have textbooks yet, I’m copying the prompts for the first writing assignment. Choose to write your essay on any one of the following:
1. Write a report on a controversial issue at your university. Assume you are writing a report for your student council. Report the facts as you find them, interview those in the know as well as those affected. Avoid inserting your personal feelings but at the end draw a reasonable inference based on your findings.
2. Write an essay in which you look at a problem, event or issue by contrasting the emotions involved with the factual evidence, if there is any. Separate fact from opinion, sort out bias, distinguish stereotypes or ideologies from hard evidence. Avoid inserting your own opinions. Attempt to reach a reasonable judgment or evaluation of your findings.
3. Write a profile of someone you’ve never met, one that reveals some unique or interesting characteristic. Research your subject, conduct interviews, observe and select details, and then synthesize it all into an interesting form.
4. Write a profile of someone you’ve met only recently. Interview your subject. Show them in action in the place he or she works or in his or her interactions with others.
Let me add that in these unprecedented times, you should do the research while observing the social distancing guidelines set out for our safety by health experts. For example, you may want to do interviews by phone, email or ZOOM instead of in person.
