A 7 year old comes in to the outpatient mental health clinic. He is brought in by his mother. His mother is a recent immigrant from the Dominican Republic. She shared that the child has not been behaving in school since he arrived to NYC in Sept 2019. She shares that in the Dominican Republic, he did not have behavioral problems. She told the interviewer that the school says, He is hyper and needs medication.
The mother shared that she is currently looking for work as a hair stylist, as that was her profession in the Dominican Republic. She does not speak English, nor does her son. She only speaks Spanish. She also shared that right now she is renting a room, in a 3 bedroom apartment, where two other families live. She shared that her son, who has a twin brother, does not have anywhere to play and is not allowed in the living room. She understands, that when he is in school, that sometimes he may be hyper and playful”. She would like to obtain employment, and move into an apartment with just her two sons ( 7 year old twin boys). The father of her sons lives in the Dominican Republic.
What cultural or socio-economic factors may need to be addressed when working with this client? If this client was only prescribed medication for his hyperactive behavior, is it possible he would get better? Why or why not? Please be sure to apply any support from readings or videos.
