INSTRUCTIONS: You have 48 HOURS to complete this quiz from the time that it is made available on the course homepage. This exam is OPEN BOOK and you can use the powerpoints and course textbook – but no other materials are permitted. You are absolutely NOT permitted to collaborate with your colleagues in the class or anyone else. I expect that you write this exam on your own – as you would a paper. I will be cross referencing exam answers so I expect that each of you has a unique answer. DO NOT CHEAT. Good exam answers will show your integrated, thematic knowledge of the course material.
Short Answer Questions (5 points each)
You must answer THREE (3) of the following SIX (6) questions.
1. A friend says to you “Did you read about that recent shooting in the paper? Just another example of random violence”. As a criminology student, how would you respond to this friend?
2. A friend says “It’s neat that you’re taking criminology. All criminals are psychopaths, right?” As a criminology student, how would you respond to this friend?
3. What makes criminology a science? In your answer, be sure to discuss several ways that criminologists conduct research.
4. Find a news article about a crime. Evaluate the crime from a classical and positivist perspective. What would a criminologist with classical assumptions say about it? What would a criminologist with positivist assumptions say about it? In your answer, copy and paste the URL link to the article. If the link is not included – your answer will not be counted.
5. Make your own question: Devise five multiple choice questions that show your knowledge of the course material. The five multiple choice questions should include the question (for example “Which of the following…”) and a selection of four possible responses (A, B, C, D). Include the correct answer.
Your answer to this question will simply be a list of the five multiple choice questions that you devise. You will be evaluated on the quality of your questions and the extent to which they reflect your knowledge of the course material. As a plagiarism check – your questions MUST reflect the uniqueness of the course material in our class.
FINAL ESSAY (15 points)
For the essay portion of the exam you need to write a maximum 3 page reflection essay (double spaced) on the basic thesis of the course: crime as an event. (For instance, you may address: What does it mean to say crime is an event? What do we have to gain from studying crime from this perspective? How does this perspective differ from popular discourse on crime?). For this essay question, you may also use a recent newspaper story to illustrate your answer if you like (provide the link).
Your essay should show your knowledge of the course material, critical reflection on the essay topic and basic ideas presented in the course, and ability to support your claims with logic/evidence. A well written essay will show an integrated knowledge of the course material.
Please note that simply reiterating my lectures/course content is not sufficient – I am looking for a thoughtful and critical answer to the essay question. Be concise and thoughtful in your answer. I will not read beyond the 3 page limit.
