Write an essay that explores the topic of the course is the intersection of language and identity and the essay will center on some specific aspect of language and identity. Students will build on their literacy autobiographies to develop a thesis about the role of language and identity in the writer’s own life, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, and another text–a supplementary reading from the class or a researched source. This could deal with body image, adolescence, educational experiences, ethnic or racial identity, gender and sexual identity, socio-economic identity, or any other aspect of life and identity that the student sees as central to their own lives and the texts that they confront; if you want to explore a topic that we haven’t explicitly discussed, make a proposal, and we will talk it through. Final papers should be typed and follow MLA guidelines for formatting, citation, and style.
