In the Readings section (pp. 270-81), you will find a text by Danielle Allen that begins with its central question in the title: “What Is Education For?” Read the essay through once, underlining the questions Allen poses. Then take notes on the various answers she provides to those questions: some of the answers will draw on sources by experts; others, especially paragraphs late in essay, will explain Allen’s own thoughts.
After having read and taken notes on Allen’s essay, I wouldlike you to pose questions about your own education. Make a list of five or more open-ended questions about the ideas and practices that shaped your education from kindergarten through college. Select the questions you find most compelling and write an extended response that reflects on the goals and purposes of the education you’ve received and that then considers how those goals and purposes align with your own ideas about what education should be for.
