Write and discuss reviews of jazz performances on YouTube.
First, select two jazz artists using the lists of jazz found below. Then , go to YouTube.com and do a search for each artist. Listen to several the recordings from the results and select one for each artist to be the subject of your review. For example, you could go with heavily contrasting selections like “Spain” an up-tempor Latin-jazz tune featuring Chic Corea on piano and “Lil’ Darlin “, a slow swing number featuring the Count Basie Orchestra, or perhaps a ballad featuring a vocalist such as Sarah Vaughan or Ella Fitzgerald and an up-tempo instrumental piece featuring Charlie Parker, or a jazz-rock fusion with electric guitarist and a medium swing number with a front line of horns. But you could also select two artists who play the same instruemnt and write about the similarities and differences between them. For example, you could select John Coletrand and Sonny Rollings, two tenor saxophonists, or J. J. Johnson and Kid Ory two trombone players etc… Once you find the recordings you wish to use, copy the URL from your browser window and paste it into your review to use as a citation and so your readers can for future reference.
These include, but are not limited to sound, instrumentation, form, timber, harmony, rhythm, melody, dynamic contrast, improvisation, etc.. Listen closely to the improvisations. Do they sound the same or different? Focus on what you hear and understand.
write a 300-to-500-word review of each performance. Focus on describing what you hear using appropriate terminology from the early chapters on jazz basics. Feel free to combine both reviews and compare and contrast them if you wish, but only if you want to. The perspective from which you write is where you can get creative.
Is it the timbre and expressiveness of the instrumental soloist or vocalist? Or is it their note selection?
Here are some other things to consider: Does the accompayment sound good to your? Why or why not? What are all the instruments featured in the selection? Which ones are featurd in improvised solos? Of those, which is your favorite? Why? At what point in the song is this feeling most powerful? Why? Be specific.
