Instructions: Select a research prompt from the attached list. You may use the same research topic and data sets you or another student used for the first project, or you may come up with your own research topic. Whereas the first project only used between 5 to 25 data points, for this project use as much of the data as you practically can; if possible use all available data in your data set. You can find a relevant data sets in the Primary Source Directory updated to include all databases we discussed and to include a section on data analysis tools. Once you have the data, analyze the tendency and trends within it (descriptive analysis), and decide what story the data tells (expose useful correlations present)1. Chose at least two visualization or displays to effectively tell that story. For example, Jesus Barajas in Biking Where Black effectively told the story with two heat maps: one showing where bicycle safety was an issue, the other showing where bicycle code enforcement was occurring. Two epidemiolocal maps helped solve the medical mystery of the meat allergy (see data visualization slides). The Prison Policy Initiative’s “Whole Pie” effectively tells the story of prison demographics.2 Use whatever statistics software you have available to you, there are tutorials on iLearn for Rawgraphs and Microsoft Excel. Write and submit a brief report (3 to 5 pages) describing your methodology and findings. In your report tell the reader: 1. The research prompt you chose. 2. Your source(s) of your data. 3. Your degree of confidence in the source(s). 4. Any instructions, codes, legend or key necessary to understand your displays. 5. The displays.
