There are two physical “real” characters: the writer and the carpenter. When stories use agentive nouns, it is usually for the sake of allowing associations, of alluding, to other historical/literary figures and/or a generalized type. What allusions might “writer” and “carpenter” might elicit? (There are a couple we’ll talk about, but can you think of any?) What about the “young thing”
Consider the word “subject” early in the story. It is used in a similar sense of “topic” when mentioning the “war”, or American Civil War. What other meanings does the subject have? What do the Civil War and the carpenter’s experience add to the meaning of the story?
Gender identity and history: How does the description of the young thing go against conventional thinking about gender? How does it oppose and/or reflect the time in which it was written?
