You have tasked by one of the Principal Engineers at your firm to review the Federal Highway
Administration (FHWA) method for calculating the axial capacity of piles. They want you to write a
report summarizing the method and to provide an example calculation demonstrating how to use the
FHWA method. The principal provided you with CPT, SPT, and Oedometer data from a recent project in
downtown Boston you can use in the example. You may also use reasonable correlations from textbooks
or the NAVFAC manual. The report you generate will be distributed to your colleagues for use as a
design reference in future projects.
For this project you will be required to review the method for calculating the axial capacity of driven piles
from the FHWA Design and Construction of Driven Pile Foundations manual.
