Rationale: The purpose of this assignment is to provide you (student) with an opportunity to enhance critical thinking and analytic skills by exploring one of the American Social Welfare Values (ASWVs) by writing a scholarly paper. You will define and analyze one of the ASWVs and explain the hypocrisy associated with it from a social work perspective as it relates to social injustice, systemic racism and inequality, Black Lives Matter Movement, and oppression of marginalized population groups. You will analyze how people in power have twisted and used the chosen ASWV to sustain systemic racism and inequality that have led to Black Lives Matter Movement. Prior to writing this paper, you should read thoroughly (Chapter one): American Social Welfare Values (P.J. Day & J.H. Schiele 2013, posted on blackboard). Research any information about the chosen ASWV that will help you increase your understanding of how that value manifests in American society.
Your paper should include three distinct parts. Use the introduction to setup your paper, the body to support your policy research findings and arguments, and the conclusion to summarize the arguments. Use the introduction to frame the argument for your paper. Begin by creating a thesis, or main argument you will support throughout the paper. For example, “Discussing the hypocrisy of the American Ideal is a difficult concept to approach because it requires a sociological analysis of how people behave toward other people who are considered “beautiful and valuable.” Keep the thesis direct and straightforward, so that your readers will have a clear understanding of the focus of your paper.
Place an interesting quote from our textbook or from any other sources at the beginning of the introduction, to grab the readers’ attention and draw them into the paper. Put the thesis at the end of the introduction to setup the rest of your paper. Write the body paragraphs to support the argument in your thesis. Break the body of the paper into subheadings as needed. Include direct quotes from the textbook, and explain how these quotes relate to your argument. Include reasons why this discussion is relevant to social work. Finish your paper with the conclusion section. Tell the reader how the details in the body (subheadings) paragraphs support your main arguments. Consider restating your thesis in a different way to remind the reader of your argument. Most importantly, include the reasons why the reader should agree with you. Avoid using cliché phrases such as ‘in summary,’ or ‘to conclude.’ Show the relevance of this information for social work practice and policy.
A minimum of 8-page paper is required (maximum 10 pages) excluding cover page and abstract. The instructor will grade your paper on grammar, mechanics and usage, use of APA style, detailed concrete content, readable and understandable. The instructor will assess for how well you explained the ASWV chosen and evidence of its hypocrisy in American society; how your research findings and analysis provide evidence of the twisted ASWV to sustain systemic racism and inequality, oppression of African Americans and other marginalized groups. You should have at least five (5-10) or more scholarly sources in the references. You are encouraged to submit all papers to the area specified as “hypocrisy” in blackboard. Some of the American social welfare values are (Judeo-Christian charity, democratic egalitarianism, individualism, protestant work ethic, capitalism, social Darwinism, new puritanism, patriarchy, marriage and nuclear family, human rights, and equality).
