Writing an Argument for Cutting Out Beef and Dairy to Fight Climate Change

For this essay assignment, you will be formulating and proving your own argument. Instead of coming up with your own topic, you will have to write about the following:

Thesis statement: the effects of climate change have become so dire that we need to do something now. One of the solutions to mitigating climate change is cutting out beef and dairy in our diets. (please do not literally copy and paste this sentence; you cannot use it as your thesis statement).
In order to prove your thesis mentioned above, the body of your essay needs to address the following points.

2 body paragraphs using evidence and logos: the effects of climate change–climate whiplash, floods, wildfires–have caused much damage in California to the point that we need to do something to slow it down.
2 body paragraphs using evidence and logos: since beef and dairy cattle produce large emissions of methane, a greenhouse gas, and release of carbon dioxide due to land use, we can reduce methane emissions and replenish land that no longer is required to raise beef and dairy cattle.
At least 1 body paragraph using evidence and ethos: by cutting out beef and dairy, we can contribute to the cause of climate justice. By cutting down methane emissions and replenishing land once used for cattle, we can directly help those nations who are suffering the most but have contributed the least to greenhouse gas emissions.
The basic requirements are as follows: one introduction, at least five body paragraphs, and one conclusion. However, you do not have to be so academic in this essay assignment. Play with language and tone, even in your intro and conclusion. You can use “I”, “you”, or “we” in this assignment. You should consider how you can infuse your essay with an argumentative tone that will make me pay attention to your argument. Nonetheless, here are the rhetorical tools that you need to utilize in each body paragraph:

Claim: a claim acts much like a topic sentence; you will introduce the point you are going to prove. For example, you can make a claim that says factory farming produces methane, a dangerous greenhouse gas.
Evidence: you must use the sources that I have provided in preparation for this essay. I have provided either a link or a pdf for each source. Do not look for and use your own sources. You can only use the ones listed below.

Appeal: you should develop both logical (logos) and ethical (ethos) appeals. For instance, when you are developing your logos, you can make a cause-and-effect argument using numerical and/or research data proving how beef is adding the climate change crisis. When you are developing your ethos, you should demonstrate how rich, developed nations have produced the most emissions but poorer countries are suffering because of these emissions; therefore, cutting out beef and dairy to help save those suffering is the right thing to do. A strong body paragraph will create a great mixture of evidence and appeal (either logos or ethos). Please do not combine logos and ethos. That tactic will only make your argument confusing.
I will provide a sample argumentative essay about the problem of overfishing and the solutions to solve it. Please use the essay as model. However, you should not copy it word for word. You must write your argument in your own words.

Lastly, you need to follow Modern Language Association (MLA) citation rules. The basic guideline is that you cite the author’s last name and page number or article title if there is no page number. This guideline refers to the in-text citation when you quote or paraphrase outside sources in your paragraphs. Please cite anything that comes from the sources, be it a definition of climate change or evidence. You will also need to present a “Works Cited” list of the sources you have used. You only need to copy and paste the list that I have provided below. I will also post instructional videos on MLA rules.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

This essay must be typed and double-spaced. The font must be no larger than twelve points. I will be asking you to follow MLA rules, so the font should be “Times New Roman.”
Please type your name, my name, English 101, and the due date on the upper left-hand corner of the first page. This essay must also have a title, and please be creative.
The essay must be at least four full pages, not including the “Works Cited” page. DO NOT “pad” the essay with large margins or large spaces between paragraphs. Otherwise, I will have to grade you down.
This essay is due by Thursday, 1/26 by 9:00 am. Please see the syllabus regarding the late paper policy. In addition, please be aware that Canvas only recognizes Google docs and MS Word docs. To ensure that I am able to read your essay, you should convert your document into a pdf before uploading it onto Canvas.

Note from customer: This is for a college level english 101 course so it should not sound too advanced for my level. We are just learning MLA in text and works cited for reference. I do ask that it be an A worthy paper but preferably nothing that will raise too much suspicion. If you have trouble accessing the links please reach out. There must also be an MLA works cited page below the essay.
