Writing Assignment/Analyzing Sources on the Open Web

Purpose: to demonstrate understanding of analytic and persuasive techniques taught in the last few weeks of the course: how to write rhetorically and how to read vertically and laterally. Students can learn to analyze sources from these angles to better understand who is behind the information and whether they should be considered a reliable source of information for readers.
Task: Choose an article from any “news-like” outlet that falls within the yellow or red parameters painted inside the Ad Fontes Media Bias Chart (Links to an external site.). That exterior border rates “News Value and Reliability” on a red to yellow to green scale, and we are looking for articles that score low on this scale; they will be easier to analyze because they will provide you with more examples to use as support and development for your thesis. Therefore, you should avoid the sources in the green, top third of the chart when you select the source you will analyze for this essay.
Essay Type: After you carefully evaluate the source you have chosen, write an essay of approximately 1200-1500 words that analyzes the source in three ways: vertically, laterally, and rhetorically.
Thesis: your essay should be argumentative in nature, so it should make a claim that is defended with evidence from your evaluation, i.e. what is your judgment of the article you chose and its place of publication? Who is behind the information, what is their purpose, and is it objective enough to be considered a reliable source of information for readers?
Audience: your audience should be USA college students who might stumble upon this source while surfing the internet online. Should they read it? Why or why not? Can they rely on it? Why or why not?
Organization: Outline Required: Follow the outline template provided for this unit and submit your own bullet-point outline to Canvas that shows some of the main points of your analysis.
Format: MLA; Include a Works Cited page for this assignment
