Week 4 Assignment – Writing the Discussion Section of a Research Paper
No unread replies.No replies.
In this brief writing assignment, you will focus on what to include when writing a Discussion Section of a research paper. This will be based on your SimBio Community Dynamics Lab, specifically focusing on section 2. To support you in writing the Discussion Section, refer to pages 30-33 of the Writing Scientific Manuscript. The “Discussion Section Review Standards” checklist is a useful tool to help you form your Discussion Section.
The most important thing to remember is that the discussion is NOT just a re-wording of the experimental results. This is a deep dive into the meaning and interpretation of the results. This section is used to discuss or explain why the results do or don’t fit the initial hypothesis, as well as identify any potential limitations of the experiment. If the results were unexpected, this section may suggest possible reasons why unexpected results may have occurred. Furthermore, if there are practical applications or improvements that could be made to the experiment, this would be the place to make those known. The Discussion Section may be the most difficult to write out of all of the sections of your research paper because it requires you to synthesize your whole experiment.
Remember, you are practicing here on writing the Discussion section of a research paper using Section 2 of SimBio’s Community Dynamics lab as material. You are writing a Discussion as though for a research paper on the topic of that lab.
Your submission should be 1-2 pages in length.
You will need to include two additional sources properly cited in APA format.
