The Historical Review Papers (3) will look at a number of historical events important in American and world history vital for national security. For national security professionals, understanding and analyzing history correctly is an imperative. From that historical analysis important lessons can be acquired. Not surprisingly, worldviews are an important aspect of historical analysis–even definitions of words to include the definition and belief in facts.[1] Each worldview looks at history differently. Some of the more common worldviews are: Secularism, Postmodernism, Marxism, and the biblical/Judeo-Christian worldview. For example, some worldviews may practice historical revisionism which is deleterious to accurate historical analysis.
In this paper, the focus will be on two WWII events: Pearl Harbor and the Battle of Midway. Everyone has some knowledge about these events, but it is likely that you will learn some things you did not know before and have a deeper understanding of the historical events. More importantly, this will be an exercise in discernment and critical thinking skills that are very practical in either the academic or professional field of national security. In addition, you need to look at the various key actors (e.g., both the Japanese and the U.S.).
