Give an example of an area where people are sometimes accused of being “judgmental” when they are really only making a “judgment”. If you have been in this kind of situation, describe how you responded or what some helpful ways to respond would be.
Describe an issue that you may encounter as a social worker where you need more information or a better understanding of what the Bible has to say about it to enable you to “judge correctly” as a person of faith or someone who will work with people of Christian faith. Describe one thing you will you do to prepare yourself for this before completing the program.
How have you been affected personally by the sometimes unbalanced focus in our culture on avoiding judgment? Where do you feel guilty or conflicted about making judgments, even those you believe God says are wrong? How do your feelings or attitudes affect your professional identity and ability to integrate your faith and social work?
Many social workers, especially those who are Christian, fear judging in the form of imposing their values or on others. After reviewing the power point slides indicated above, explain what a broader view of what imposing values does and doesn’t entail and mean for social workers. Give an example of a value social workers already impose on clients, even through the code of ethics. How is this different from coercion?
