“What are the Greek gods like, and how do they interact with humans? What does this tell us about the way the Greeks see the world and why?”

This is for a discussion post and it does not have to be super long. A paragraph minimum for each question. There were also links of Youtube videos and an article provided for this assignment so I will post it here, and they’ll be at the very bottom of this.

This week you’ll be reading two of the “books” (sections) of The Illiad: the classic Greek tale of warfare, heroism and tragedy in the Trojan War. Most people have probably heard of this or even read it in high school. It’s about 600 pages, so we are only readings books XX and XXI.

There are a series of videos and an article that give some context for our passages. Our textbook also provides context for The Illiad, so definitely read our chapter first.
We will have two discussions this week on The Illiad. The first part is:

“What are the Greek gods like, and how do they interact with humans? What does this tell us about the way the Greeks see the world and why?”

The second part is:

“What are the Greek heroes like? What specific characteristics do the show, and why are those good or bad according to the storyteller (and according to the Gods who witness them)? What does this tell us about the Greek worldview and why?”
