For this first writing project we pick up where most of the English 101 classes end, with the argumentative essay, but in this case we are focused exclusively in seeing you put to use what you have learned about the Toulmin Model. Previously, I have assigned questions to students, and I am continuing that tradition with the following inquiry question:
What, if any, mandates (mask, vaccine, etc.) should be made for combating the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S.?
Now, within that question you can interpret the key words “mandatory” or “citizens” anyway you would like. For example, you might argue that a vaccine should be mandatory for first-responders but not everyone, or you may want to argue that social distancing needs to be a permanent fixture in U.S. society. You can also tailor the argument to focus on a single locality (city or county), state, or federal level, but let’s focus on the present moment rather than retroactively arguing for what should have happened at the beginning of the pandemic (though you can include that as part of the essay as a warrant, backing, etc.)
