For this week’s WRITE/ENGAGE, share the following:
1) which way of determining American Indian identity seems most ‘reasonable’ to you (For this part of your answer, make an argument for either ancestry, culture, self-identification, federal law, or tribal law as the best source of identity information)
2) what is not so reasonable about that way of constructing identity? (Here, I want you to push yourself to question the source of identity you picked in number 1. Compare it to one of the other ways of determining identity or to the ‘one drop rule’ to show how identity really can’t be captured in this way
The goal of this assignment is to demonstrate you have done the reading and that you can identify ways racial identity is socially constructed, NOT fixed or biological, and up for negotiation. In your reply to a classmate’s post, consider sharing something new/different than what you have seen other students share so we don’t end up with an overly repetitive discussion. Also, be sure to tell us what page of the textbook or what minute of the video you are referring to. This demonstrates you engaged with the reading/video while also helping us find the place to learn more if we are interested.
